Print the directories of a volume

Source
Use the old Dos command tree
Run cmd.exe
Type
tree > c:\tree.txt to save it to a text file. If you just open that up in notepad the characters might look all garbled, but if you open it in MS Word and say to use DOS Encoding, then everything should look just fine.
tree /a >d:\tree.txt
The /f flag on tree displays all of the contents of the subfolders as well.
tree /f > d:\tree.txt
To just tree from a certain directory, you have to type
tree [directory name]
not just run the program from that directory.

-------------------------------
Use the dir command, pipe it to a file, and print the file.
The /d switch only displays the filenames and directory names of Z: (directories in []'s).
The /s switch breaks everything down and displays all of the contents of all of the subdirectories.
dir /d /s Z:\ > X:\mydir.txt
-------------------------------
Use the screen capture utility HyperSnap.
You can capture a region of the screen by dragging a boundary area with your mouse, or you can get the whole listing by capturing with its autoscrolling feature (a window larger than 1 screenful will automatically scroll the capture area for you).
--------------------------------
PrintFolder - when it's installed, you seee PrintFolder as one of the options when you right-click on a directory in Windows Explorer. Does folders and subfolders
--------------------------------
SysExporter, too, is a super-useful program.
---------------------------------
Any serious drive reorganization effort will also be helped by SpaceMonger. You can see at a glance where all the big stuff is hiding.

The JR Directory Printer Utility allows you to print a listing of every file contained within a directory and/or subdirectory(ies).

The result displayed in NotePad or default text editor as "dirprint.txt" file. This file is created in "JR Directory Printer" installtion folder, each time you click "Start" button.
Options:
Check Recurse Sub-directories option to see a complete list of all subdirectories and all files in all directories.
The Lowercase Filename option will force all file names into lowercase regardless of the actual file name.
Dos style filename option will limit the file name length within 8 chars.
Display Sub-directories will result in a list of all subdirectories contained under the selected directory along with a list of all individual files contained under the root directory.  It will not list all subdirectories or individual files contained in the main subdirectories.  To see a complete list of all subdirectories and all files in all directories, you would check the Recurse Sub-directories option and click on the Start button. This would rewrite the"dirprint.txt" file using the new options.
You can limit length file names so that they fits properly in list. By default this value is 35 chars.
You can check/uncheck Display Size, DateTime and Attributes option to list/unlist the file size, modified date/time and file attributes (a - Archives, r - Read Only, s - System, h - Hidden).

Reinitializing the cache

Source

How can I delete all the files from the cache?

or How can I reinitialize the cache?

There are 2 ways to do it.

1)By changing the registry.

Add a new value named 'FormatDatabase' under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache. From command line, you can do it as below.

cmd> REG ADD HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Cache will not be reset with every reboot of the machine as the FormatDatabase value will be deleted from the registry after the first reboot.

2)Go to My computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> Offline Files

Press CTRL+Shift and click on Delete Files

Note that in both the ways cache will be deleted only after restarting the machine.

The share I made offline has been moved to a new server but offline files is trying to synchronize with the old server. Is there any way to make it sync with the new server? I do not want to delete the files and begin everything from scratch with the new server?

There is a tool called csccmd.exe to do it.

Command:

csccmd.exe /moveshare:\\oldserver\oldshare \\newserver\newshare

Note that this command does not move the data from the old server to the new server. It just updates offline files tables with the new share path. You need to ensure that you have all the data copied to the new server before you run the above command.

My offline files folder is in c:\windows. My c:\ drive has become full, I want to move the csc folder to e:\drive which has lot of free space. I also want to copy the existing files to the new location. How to do it?

You can move the CSC folder to a new location by changing the value of 'DatabaseLocation' under

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache

From command line, you can do it as below.

cmd> REG ADD HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache /v DatabaseLocation /t REG_SZ /d /f

This just changes the offline files folder location for future. The old files which were copied in the past will still be in the old location and Offline files will not consider those files as offline. To move the already cached files to the new location use the tool cachemov.exe

Cachemov.exe can be downloaded from http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/ScriptsGuy/cachemov.zip

Below is a snapshot taken while cachemov.exe is executing.

Restricted sites zone for IE

IE-SPYAD Restricted Sites List

Last Updated: Feb 5 '08
Please Note: the original IE-SPYAD format that used .REG files to load and unload the Restricted Sites list is no longer available and will not be maintained. The same holds true for IE-SPYAD2. Both are replaced by what used to be called IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut. ZonedOut is a free utility that loads and unloads a plain text list of domains into the Restricted sites zone. You can think of ZonedOut as an improved replacement for the .BAT file utility used in the "original" IE-SPYAD. This new version of IE-SPYAD provides the same protection as the old version, but is easier to use and maintain.

IE-SPYAD contains a set of Internet Explorer "Restricted sites" lists for use with ZonedOut, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility available from FunkyToad:
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/

This Restricted sites list is the same as the older "original" IE-SPYAD. The ZonedOut utility from FunkyToad simply automates the process of loading the IE-SPYAD sites list into Internet Explorer's Restricted sites zone, much like the batch file installer in the "original" IE-SPYAD.
IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC.
Please note that IE-SPYAD is not an ad blocker. It will not block standard banner ads in Internet Explorer. What this Restricted sites list of known advertisers and crapware pushers will do, however, is:

  • stop unwanted crapware from being installed behind your
    back via "drive-by-downloads";
  • prevent the hijacking of your home page and other key
    Internet Explorer settings;
  • shut down ActiveX, Java, and scripting, all of which can
be employed to push obnoxious advertising on you and
    compromise your privacy and security;
  • block cookies, which can be used to monitor and track your
    travels around the Internet;
  • combat obnoxious script-based popups that clutter your
screen and force unwanted advertising on you.

This Restricted sites list is based in part on info from:

You can read a "Targeting and Inclusion Policy" for IE-SPYAD HERE.
For privacy and security in Internet Explorer, you may also be interested in another utility available from this site: Enough is Enough!.

Compatibility:
This ad/spy server "Restricted Zone" list can be used with the following versions of Internet Explorer:

  • Internet Explorer 7.0
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 (incl. SP1)
  • Internet Explorer 5.5 (incl. SP1 & SP2)

Note: this file works only with Internet Explorer; it will have no effect whatsoever on Opera, Mozilla, Netscape 6.0/7.0, or the older Netscape Navigator/Communicator.
To use the IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut "Restricted sites" lists you must also download ZonedOut, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility:
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/

Installation & Use:
To install and uninstall the IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut Restricted sites lists, you must download and use ZonedOut, a free Internet Explorer zone management utility:
http://www.funkytoad.com/content/view/15/33/
After you load the IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut Restricted sites list, make sure that your settings for the Restricted sites zone in Internet Explorer are configured for maximum paranoia (i.e., set everything to "Disable" or "Prompt").
For more information on installing and using the IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut Restricted sites list as well as the ZonedOut utility, consult the ReadMe.txt included in the package. To view ReadMe.txt online, click HERE.
For more information on the Restricted sites zone, how it is used, as well as troubleshooting tips, see the ReadMe for the "original" IE-SPYAD HERE.

Uninstall Previous Versions:
If you have installed a previous version of IE-SPYAD, you should uninstall that old version before installing the new version. Use the ZonedOut utility from FunkyToad to uninstall those older versions, including any "original" versions of IE-SPYAD that you might have installed. (Note that the ZonedOut utility will not uninstall IE-SPYAD2 versions of the Restricted sites list. To uninstall IE-SPYAD2, use the uninstaller that came with IE-SPYAD2.)

LSP-Fix (more info)

LSP-Fix is a free utility to repair a specific type of problem
associated with certain Internet software. This type of software is
known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP, a piece of software that
can be inserted into the Windows TCP/IP handler like a link in a chain.
However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software,
this chain can get broken, rendering the user unable to access the
Internet.

Unfortunately, this type of software is sometimes quietly installed
by unrelated software such as file-sharing programs, sneaking onto a
system unannounced. In fact, in many cases, the user does not know of
its existance until something goes wrong, and he/she can no longer
access Web sites. Common offenders include New.net* (NEWDOTNET) and
WebHancer*, which are often bundled with file-sharing utilities, DVD
player software, and other free downloads. LSP-Fix repairs the Winsock
LSP chain by removing the entries left behind when LSP software is
removed by hand (or when errors in the software itself break the LSP
chain), and removing any gaps in the chain.

LSP-Fix is not a malware removal utility and does not target specific products. LSP-Fix does not delete any files.

LSP-Fix

Source Thanks!
Repairs Winsock 2 settings, caused by buggy or improperly-removed Internet software, that result in loss of Internet access
LSP-Fix is a free Windows utility to repair a loss of Internet access associated with certain types of software. This type of software, known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP, typically handles low-level Internet-related tasks, and data is passed through a chain of these programs on its way to and from the Internet. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software, this chain can get broken, causing the Internet connection to become inaccessible.

Unfortunately, problematic LSP software, including malware/spyware, is sometimes quietly installed by unrelated products such as file-sharing programs, sneaking onto a system unannounced. In fact, in many cases, the user does not know of its existence until something goes wrong, and he/she can no longer access Web sites. Historically, New.net* (NEWDOTNET) and WebHancer* (often bundled with file-sharing utilities, DVD player software, and other free downloads) have been the worst offenders, but the problem can be caused by any improperly-written Layered Service Provider software, or the deletion of any LSP program's files. LSP-Fix repairs the LSP chain by removing the entries left behind when LSP software is removed by hand (or when errors in the software itself break the LSP chain), and removing any gaps in the chain.
LSP-Fix is not a malware removal utility and does not target specific products. LSP-Fix does not delete any files.

Download:: (All downloads will fit easily on a floppy disk.)

  • LSP-Fix * (.zip) v1.1 - includes the program, documentation and source code.
If you are using the program on a machine that cannot open .zip files, or are downloading for a friend whom you're not sure can read .zip files, download the uncompressed files below instead. It will take a bit longer, but this way the program can be used as-is (e.g. from a floppy disk).

New in this version:

  • LSP chains entirely verified on program start, and status (errors / no errors) now displayed on the program main window.
  • If Winsock2 registry keys are inaccessible, LSP-Fix now warns the user to log in as Administrator and retry, rather than reporting the key as missing.
  • Released under the GNU General Public License.
Please refer to the Readme for a complete list of changes.

winsock LSP (c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll)

Source
If you have used Hijackthis to track down a virus, spyware, or malware, you may have seen the file nwprovau.dll in your hijackthis log with the statement - "unknown file in winsock lsp".
The file nwprovau.dll is a legitimate file installed by Client Service for NetWare. Its usually installed for the IPX/SPX protocol that is rarely used anymore. This is why it doesn't show up in EVERY hijackthis log file. However, the question remains: is the file needed if Client Service for Netware is not running on the computer? In my testing, the entry in the Hijackthis log is not needed if you are not using Netware and the IPX/SPX protocol is not installed on your computer. Since most networks now have standardized on using the TCP/IP protocol, this shouldn't be a problem if its removed.

Although there is a Windows Service Patch - MS06-066: Vulnerability in the Client Service could allow remote code execution that does update the file on Windows computers, the entry in hijackthis does not need to be there unless Client for Netware is installed. I understand this runs contrary to what many computer support sites state. Most other sites will say leave the entry alone since its a valid Windows file. I just don't like extra items loaded that don't need to be there.
A Hijackthis log will show NWPROVAU.DLL in this way
O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\windows\system32\nwprovau.dll

In the Windows registry, the nwprovau.dll file will show up in the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\Parameters\NameSpace_Catalog5\Catalog_Entries
t will generally be shown under Key # 4 with the following information.

NWPROVAU.DLL information in registry
Can I Remove NWPROVAU.DLL From the Hijackthis log?
The answer to this question will depend on what you are doing. If your computer is connected to a Netware network, you should leave the file and entry intact. If, however, you find this log entry on a standalone computer or a personal computer that is NOT using Netware then you can for all practical purposes remove the file.
Unfortunately, you cannot remove this entry by using Hijackthis, you must download LSPFix and use it to remove the NWPROVAU protocol. To do this, follow these directions.
1) Click on the following link to download LSPFix to your desktop.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
or click on this link to download the exe file directly
http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe
2) Once the exe file is on your desktop, double-click on it to open
3) In the left hand column, you should see the NWPROVAU.DLL file listed. Send it to the right-hand column labeled Remove
NOTE: If the arrow is greyed out and does not allow you to click it, you need to check the box above labeled "I know what I'm doing"
4) Once the file has been transferred to the Remove column, click Finish at the bottom of the screen. You'll be presented with a results screen showing the file was removed from the Winsock layer entries in the registry. Close the LSPFix program now.
5) Run Hijackthis and the entry for NWPROVAU.DLL should now be gone from the list.

Defragmenters

Source
Click image for larger version Name: ud.JPG Views: 8 Size: 289.5 KB ID: 203154

Unlike Linux file systems, NTFS gets fragmented over time and use.
To develope a decent file system that doesn't need defragging is something
that should definitely be sorted out. Its definitely Microsoft's fault... no
doubt.
Larger and faster drives have minimized the impact of fragmentation.
The Windows file system tends to fragment files all on its own to a
small degree, but fragmentation starts for real when the drive starts
to get full—as in over 70%
.
As the drive fills up, the larger areas of
free space become scarce and the file system has no choice but to
splatter large files around the disk.
As the drive gets really full
(over 90%), the file system then starts to fragment the MFT and the
Pagefile
.
Now you've got a full drive, with lots of fragmented files,
making the job of the defragmenter nearly impossible because it also
needs space to do its job.
A drive more than 80%
full is fast not defragmentable. You can see that effect with huge hard disk
drives, since they generally use smaller percentages of the drive's
total free space. A side-effect is that the overall fragmentation is
reduced, and the fact that these drives have faster seek times makes
the effect even less noticeable.

Special comparison:

I have 3 partitions, system C, data D & E on a single HDD on this
PC. Uncompressed, unshadowed, just the plain old NTFS. The partitions
were never defragged in a life of HD (1,5 years). Here's the
"Fragmentation Analysis" results from a couple of popular defraggers
(latest versions of course) - C, D and E respectively -
  1. SmartDefrag - 55%, 42%, 44%
  2. PerfectDisk - 4%, 5.5%, 7%
  3. Diskeeper - 32%, 14%, 78%

Defraggers:
Puran, PerfectDisk, SmartDefrag, O&O, JKDefrag, UltimateDefrag, Diskkeeper, Defraggler
Best combination?: Puran+UltimateDefrag
Maybe: O&O and JKDEFRAG
My defragger: Defraggler

Smart Placement orders the files from the oldest created/modified to
the newest. It does not take in account the last access date.

This means that on the faster tracks will be placed those files that
are almost never modified and in the slower tracks will be placed your
newly created files and those that are modified more frequently.

With PD you do not gain speed at your most often tasks on the contrary you loose it.

PD defragmentation method is great for servers but is almost useless on a common use modern system.

On the other hand Puran Defrag and Smart Defrag will speed your drive,
since they place 1st the directories, 2nd the last accessed files, 3rd
a small free space
(1-2gb) which will be used for the temp files and
the more frequently modified files, 4th every other file and 5th a
large free space chunk
.

O&O gives detailed advice on what strategy to use. The choices are far more
than what other defraggers offer and when done right, O&O excels in
terms of performance. German Software, was soll denn!

Minimalistic solution:
Use Contig together with the Power Defragmenter GUI for Contig. Plus Pagedefrag when necessary. Also wipe free space with Blowfish Advanced.

DriverMax

DriverMax is a powerful free utility which helps you download, backup and restore the drivers installed on your Windows Vista or Windows XP computer and check if newer versions are available. Download all drivers from one place in just a few steps. Or back them up so you will have all of them in a single place and will be able to reinstall them in a few minutes. This tool can save you a lot of time when reinstalling Windows, especially on older computers for which the original CDs containing the drivers have been lost. You no longer have to track down old driver installation CDs, insert one installation CD after another or spend hours searching for drivers on the Internet.
DriverMax is also able to display a detailed report about all drivers (versions, release dates) installed on your system. Identify unknown devices in your computer and get Windows Vista rating information before you purchase new hardware.

Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery

Source
Our flagship product ZAR 8.3 now includes the (freely available) mode to recover digital images. Generally, program should work with any media type (e.g. CompactFlash, MemoryStick, SmartMedia and so on) accessible by means of operating system. You need the use your camera or the appropriate card reader you normally use to transfer images from camera to PC.

Standalone Digital Image Recovery tool has been discontinued 30 December 2005. Scroll down for reasons as to why.

Current version (ZAR 8.3) supports digital photo recovery for the following file formats:

  • GIF
  • JPEG
  • TIFF
  • CRW - Canon RAW data
  • MOV, AVI movie
  • WAV - Waveform audio
  • CR2 - Canon CR2 RAW format (see notes below).
  • ORF - Olympus RAW format

For a list of compatible camera models please check Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery system requirements.

The following information is available regarding Canon .CR2 raw format, thanks to Jeff of Jeff Berner Photography and Art:

ZA Digital Image Recovery recovers Canon .CR2 files as TIFF. To open recovered files, Jeff used Photoshop CS "Open With" feature, which allows to specify image format override.

General usage instructions
  1. Download, install, then run ZAR 8.3 (click here for zar83setup.exe).
  2. Attach the camera or insert the memory card into the reader device.
  3. On the first screen, no adjustment is required, just hit "Next>>".
  4. Program will then prompt you for an operation mode. Select "Recover images from camera memory card", then hit "Next>>".
  5. Select your camera from the list of the attached devices. You can identify the camera by its media size or by the model name (if available).
  6. The rest is mostly automatic. When the analysis is done, select files to recover, specify the directory to place recovered files to, hit "Start copying" and you're done.

Why did you discontinue the standalone tool?
This serves as the platform for future image recovery function enhancement. We decided that it would be much easier to implement some heavyweight image recovery algorithms this way.

Original Digital Image Recovery was freeware, but ZAR 8.3 seems not?
The digital picture recovery functions are implemented in the trial version of ZAR 8.3 in full. Hence you just need to download the evaluation version of ZAR 8.3 and it does the job at no charge. So, picture recovery functions are actually freeware. There are no plans to charge for it.

FTDI utilities

Source
The utilities page contains useful programs that are intended for use by manufacturers. Use of some of these utilities by an end user may result in a device being rendered useless.

Some of the supplied utilities (e.g. MProg) allow manufacturers to program EEPROM contents "on-site" - i.e. a blank EEPROM is soldered onto the PCB and the utility allows the manufacturer to configure and test the product as part of the production and test process.

Microsoft USBView - USB Connection Viewer
USBView is a free utility from Microsoft  that displays the USB connection tree and shows the USB devices that are connected to it together with their configuration data.  This is very useful for debugging USB enumeration errors.  USBView runs under Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP.

USBView is available for download as a .zip file by clicking here.

USBView for Linux - USB Connection Viewer

A version of USBView is available for Linux from http://www.kroah.com/linux-usb/.  As with the Windows version, this displays a connection tree of all the USB devices connected to the PC.

MProg 3.0a - EEPROM Programming Utility

MProg supersedes the FTD2XXST utility and is the current EEPROM programming utility from FTDI.  MProg has the ability to erase, program, read and read and parse the EEPROM contents for FT232R, FT245R, FT2232, FT232B, FT245B, FT8U232AM and FT8U245AM devices.  MProg has a clear user interface for selecting settings and a facility to save EEPROM templates to file which can be loaded later for programming more devices.  Multiple devices may programmed at the same time, thus saving time in manufacturing.  Help files are included and explain all of the features available.  Please note that MProg 3.0a will not work correctly under Windows 98/ME with the latest D2XX drivers (3.1.4).

Unlike the FTD2XXST utility, MProg does not contain any test features other than confirming the EEPROM contents have been written correctly.

MProg is available for download by clicking here.  MProg requires FTDI's D2XX drivers to run correctly.

The MProg User Guide is available for download as a .PDF by clicking here.

FTClean - Driver Removal Utility

Uninstalling Windows drivers should always be done by selecting to remove the drivers through the "Add/Remove Programs" utility.  It is possible however, to selectively remove devices with a specific VID and PID combination by running the FTDI uninstaller manually with edited INI files containing the desired VID and PID.  The FTClean utility provides the user with an easy way of running the uninstaller without having to edit INI files.  FTClean generates the required INI files and then runs the uninstaller automatically.

To download FTClean as a .zip file with the uninstaller executable, click here.

FTDI Port Monitor - Vista Gadget

FTDI have provided a simple Windows Vista Sidebar gadget to monitor which FTDI COM ports are available.  The list of ports continuously updates to display a list of the COM port numbers assigned to currently available FTDI devices.

The gadget can be installed simply by double-clicking the file.

VCPTest - Windows CE Test Utility for USB UART Devices

The VCPTest program is intended to show how to communicate with an FTDI device from a Windows CE based system using FTDI's VCP drivers for Windows CE.  It sends and receives data through a loopback connector.
