Virtual Studio Technology & Audigy

Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology (VST) is an interface for integrating software audio synthesizer and effect plugins with audio editors and hard-disk recording systems. VST and similar technologies use Digital Signal Processing to simulate traditional recording studio hardware with software. Thousands of plugins exist, both commercial and freeware, and VST is supported by a large number of audio applications. The technology can be licensed from its creator, Steinberg.
Overview
VST plugins are generally run within a Digital Audio Workstation, providing the host application with additional functionality. Most VST plugins can be classified as either instruments (VSTi) or effects, although other categories exist. VST plugins generally provide a custom GUI, displaying controls similar to the physical switches and knobs on audio hardware. Some (often older) plugins rely on the host application for their UI.
VST instruments include software simulation emulations of well-known hardware synthesizer devices and samplers, emulating the look of the original equipment and its sonic characteristics. This enables VSTi users to use virtual versions of devices that may be otherwise difficult to obtain.
VST instruments require notes to be sent via MIDI in order to output audio, while effect plugins process audio data (some rare effect plugins do require a MIDI input too though, for example they might use MIDI sync to sweep the effect in sync with the tempo). MIDI messages can often also be used to control parameters of both instrument and effect plugins. Most host applications allow the audio output from one VST to be routed to the audio input of another VST (known as chaining). For example, output of a VST synthesizer can be sent to a VST reverb effect for further processing.
With appropriate hardware and drivers, such as a sound card that supports ASIO, VST plugins can be used in real-time. ASIO bypasses Windows' slower audio engine, offering much lower latency.

ffe

ffe is a simple, powerful Windows® front-end for FFmpeg, designed for rapid testing of its many multimedia conversion parameters, enabling you to save lots of slightly different versions of a file very, very quickly; in other words, "find the best settings". You basically throw in video files, set the output format, and click "Do It!", at which point FFmpeg leaps into action.
FFmpeg, by Fabrice Bellard, et al., is a quite incredible command-line-only multimedia converter, capable of converting a truly vast number of input and output media formats, and depending on which binary you use, supports either a HUGE number of control parameters, or a REALLY HUGE number of control parameters.
I find it most handy for converting YouTube FLV files, and the raw video from my camera. As well as converting DVD VOBs, of course.
You can basically convert anything to anything, whilst doing crazy stuff like mixing MP3 audio tracks with H264 video, and adding ID3 tags to AVI files. Big fun. Of course, it allows you do do things the correct way, too. No limits.
While converting, the console output from FFmpeg can be viewed live inside ffe, and when complete, the entire process log is available for viewing/searching.

Internet crawler

Source
Once i created new email account, and left it for one day without telling anyone about it. The next time i log in, my inbox already fill with spam and junk mail.
Its not only happened to me. Almost every one i assumed experience it. Some people even accused yahoo, hotmail and other provider of selling their user list to the spammers. Well actually it doesn't have to be that way.
As you know online search engine like yahoo, google, etc. Used a software application that they called crawler or meta-bot, to crawl through the internet page by page. For each page they try to find a relevant information of how this page will be index. For example a page about planting flower maybe indexed by flower, planting, or gardening. So this page will be added to the crawler database by the relevant information. So when next time a user type "flower" in the search category of the search engine. This page will be showed as one of the page that has relevant information about flower.
And with the fast pacing growth of online search engine. Finding a crawler application is simple enough as inserting "internet crawler" in google. You will be given a list of option, from free to propietary appliaction.
So as the spammer, all you have have to do is get a crawler, create a sub crawler for specific criteria - Crawler that only index email address they found. And abracadabra the spammer database will fill with email address ready to be spam.
Damn it how can you fight this? No matter how you try to protect your email address. One day there will be a page that will show your email address. Damn, they out smart us again!

Firefox Cache video size limit::25548 KB

If you can stream it, you can download it!

Source

There are some tools for storing streaming video from youtube or other site like keepvid.com or flv plugins for firefox. But usually just use the manual way. I go to the firefox cache directory, see the latest and usually the largest file size. Copy it to other directory and give it an .flv extension.
When I watch a rather long videos, usually the file in the cache would only store 25,584 KB of the file. This numbers is the same no matter what long video I cache. And what rather interest me is, when i see the video in my browser. It still replay able to its full length.
First you can type about:cache in your firefox address bar. There you can see the Disk Cache Device information. It can show you how many entries in your cache, Maximum Storage Size, Storage in use, and a link to the cache directory.
Well one thing that i realize is, the size of 25,548. Is the size of half of the default Maximum Storage Size in firefox, which is 50 MB. So i tried to increase the Maximum Storage Size to 200 MB and refresh the video I'm watching, and finally able to get the full size video, which in my experiment is 29,418 KB.
I think firefox is limiting the size of a cache file into half of the maximum Disk Space. This because its almost imposible for a cache directory to only contains a single file. Almost all the time the directory will contains more than one file.
But that doesn't answer why i could re-play the full file in my browser ?
My guess is, it is stored in the memory. To prove it i try watch the firefox memory usage in windows task manager. And close the tab and reopen it again. The memory usage drop significantly, but not quite the same as the full size of the file. But i'm guessing that my hunch is correct.

Johnfull I have found a 'Temp' folder for the system addition to the Cache of the Mozilla profile.
The Temp will not allow copying of contents, however. I don't intend to do more than view the youtube video on a machine without internet connection, so I don't think it's infringement on copyright. I would gladly take the lower quality video instead, but it seems to be disabled on the youtube site. They are switching more and more to the high bit videos, which will make piracy a tempting prospect for some. That might be reason enough to limit the Cache size in the browser -- it uses the data from the Temp file for playback anyway. But they should retain the low-resolution copies for folks to use remotely for their own use. Or Seamonkey could simply expand the capacity of the Cache to accommodate the new realities -- and trust users not to use it for piracy...
http://keepvid.com/ -just insert the link to the video and it provides a link to download the video file.

Type in the address bar of the Mozilla browser:
about:cache where you can examine the cache contents for both disk and memory caches. And change it to more than 50 MB
You could toggle browser.cache.memory.enable to "false", maybe it's ending up in the memory cache and you don't find it in the disk cache then.

Recently news has been circulating around the Internet of a Linux clone of Windows. Well, that’s simply not true.
There is indeed a Linux based operating system called Ylmf, however it’s anything but a clone of Windows.
Created by the Rain Forest Wind Guangdong Computer Technology Company, it’s essentially a derived work of Ubuntu, themed to look like Windows XP.
To help provide everything Windows users might need, it also comes with Wine and lots of extra goodies. Under the hood though, it’s all Linux.

Cause and effect
Software piracy is rife in China. Indeed, a pirated version of Windows 7 was created three months before the official release and readily available at local computer markets for around US$5. Microsoft knows that piracy is a big problem for them because it represents lost revenue. This is why the company has invested so much money into their activation measures.
One year ago, Steve Balmer gave a presentation to investors in which he outlined threats to the company based on current market share. He put unlicensed Windows as the second largest slice of the pie, saying:
“Number two market share goes to Windows pirated, or unlicensed. That’s a competitor that’s tough to beat, they’ve got a good price and a heck of a product, but we’re working on it.”
Guess who came after that? Yep, Linux, which Balmer sees as a bigger threat than Apple.
Bill Gates is well aware of the situation in China. During a speech at the University of Washington in 1998 he addressed this very topic, saying:
“About 3 million computers get sold every year in China, but people don’t pay for the software. Someday they will, though. As long as they are going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They’ll get sort of addicted, and then we’ll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade.”
Yes, Microsoft was happy to let China pirate Windows in order to get them “addicted” to it. A decade later just as Bill Gates said, they are in the business of collecting from the very junkies they created. One has to wonder what China would be using, had Microsoft not allowed this to happen. Exactly ten years since Bill Gates’ speech, Microsoft stepped up anti-piracy campaigns in China.
Microsoft is searching for ways to make people pay for Windows (and rightly so) but the harder they make it and the more they lock the system down, the more attractive other options become.
In August last year, four Chinese people were fined and sentenced to 3.5 years jail for distributing a pirated version of Windows XP, called Tomato Garden.
Microsoft said:
“The case served as a warning to anyone thinking about knocking off Windows 7, a new-generation Windows operating system.”
Microsoft allowed the Chinese to pirate previous versions of Windows, but now with Windows 7 out it’s finally time to collect. This court case did serve as a timely reminder of the consequences of piracy, but will it have the desired effect that Microsoft is seeking?
Just four months after the sentencing of those men, a version of Linux aimed squarely at Chinese users of Windows has arisen. It’s ironic then that as Microsoft now tries to collect on those it let pirate Windows in the past, it finds itself inadvertently pushing users over to Linux.
The question for Microsoft is whether it’s better to continue to have users on pirated copies of Windows, or on a completely different operating system altogether. By forcing users to cough up for legitimate licenses, they are doing themselves a disservice as many will switch to Linux instead. With a population as massive as China’s this has the potential to backfire on Microsoft really, really badly. On the other hand, they can’t afford not to make money.
Imitation
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but why would anyone want to make Linux look like Windows anyway? Short answer, familiarity. It’s not that the Windows interface is better than others out there, nor that it’s revolutionary, or that there aren’t any alternatives. It’s simply because it’s more widely recognized. Period.
Yes, anyone can download and use Ubuntu but like everything in the Linux world there are lots of niches to fill. In China, some 90% of computers run Windows, so if you want to get users to switch to something else, you need to make the migration as attractive and smooth as possible.
Ylmf focuses on looking like Windows so that users aren’t as daunted. They are also more likely to try it, because it feels familiar. The system also includes Wine so that users can (hopefully) seamlessly install their Windows software. If they can achieve their goal, why would users pay for Windows when they can get Linux for free?
Just how well distros like Ylmf will fare remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Linux has obviously reached a point where it’s more widely acceptable. The free aspect of the software appeals greatly to those averse to spending money on software. There are few restrictions on it (other than compliance with software licenses) which leaves users free to meddle to their heart’s content. Once users start using Free software, they are very likely to stay. So, the important part is getting them to use it in the first place. For users who have only ever used and seen Windows, a version like Ylmf could be just what the doctor ordered.
The road to freedom
While Microsoft is pushing hard against piracy to collect monies owed, they could well be doing so at a dangerous time. Linux is becoming more attractive every day and as we have seen with Ylmf it’s not too hard to achieve something which appeals to Microsoft’s market.
People might not be willing to try something which is entirely foreign, but if it provides some level of familiarity they will be more open to it. Certainly Linux should continue down its own path, doing its own thing, but at the same time it should be aware of what’s going on around it. A little bit of familiarity could go a long way to providing that step to freedom in the long run.
