El BIOS no detecta la unidad de disco duro ATA.
Las razones principales por las que un BIOS de sistema no detecta la presencia de una unidad de disco duro ATA son cinco, concretamente:
- Cable de datos dañado.
- No llega corriente al disco (el disco no gira).
- Ajustes de puente incorrectos en la unidad.
- Capacidad del disco duro mayor que la admitida por el BIOS.
- Disco duro dañado.
Los apartados 1, 2, 3 y 5 se refieren a PC o Mac Sistemas. El apartado 4 se refiere solo a sistemas PC.

For those who haven't read up to date, here's a summary:
1. Certain Seagate hard drives have a firmware defect. If it strikes, the HD won't be recognized after a power-off, and will have to be sent to Seagate for a fix. Seagate put out a fix a couple of days ago, the fix itself was defective, they pulled it, and then yesterday or today (22-23 Jan) put out a corrected fix which does work. Ignore any advice based on the old situation prior to 22 January.
2. If you have installed a Seagate drive in the past year or so, adn it's still working OK, see this page: »seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/s···d=207931 (or »seagate.custkb.com/seagate/com.i···=_parent)
3. Read that page carefully, and download the little "Drive Detect" utility and run it to see the model number and other data about your drive.
4. Compare your model number with the list on the page. If your HD is *not* one of those affected, disregard the rest of this and go on your way and be glad.
If your HD model *is* one of those affected, *Write down the model number*, especially if you have more than one Seagate drive. Also note the revision (firmware version).
5. Click on the model number on the above-linked page and download the fix. It is a CD image. Burn a CD of it, using "Recorder" -> "Burn Image" in Nero, or similar feature in another burning program.
6. Put the CD in, reboot, and set your BIOS to boot from CDROM (fi it isn't already that way). Then boot from the CD if it doesn't happen already at this point.
7. There will be a text file displayed. Read it, then press Esc and you'll get a menu. If there is a list of drives, select one with the model number you wrote down.
8. Now *WAIT* for the software to run completely. Don't touch the keyboard! until it has completely finished. Then it will power off the PC.
9. Turn PC back on, take the CD out before the PC tries to boot from it, and you should be able to boot up normally.
10. Run "Drive Detect" again and it should show the new firmware version as "SD1A".
If your HD is affected, but you are not confident with the above procedure, don't attempt it. Instead email the seagate help address on the above-linked page.

Based on the low risk as determined by an analysis of actual field return data, Seagate believes that the affected drives can be used as is. However, as part of our commitment to customer satisfaction, Seagate is offering a free firmware upgrade.

La falla del firmware es fulminante cuando se da. La opcion para recuperar los datos es enviar el disco a una empresa especializada. OnRetrieval, Ontrack, Onrescue, etc. son algunos ejemplos.
Los costes ascienden a 60 euros en adelante por el servicio prestado.
