STOP 0x000000ED

STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
This document pertains to HP and Compaq Desktop PCs with Windows XP.
The HP and Compaq Desktop computer does not boot into Windows XP. Instead, the error message Unmountable_Boot_Volume appears. Follow the instructions below to run Chkdsk from a Recovery Console to fix this issue.
Updated information from Microsoft
Read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q315403 (in English) for more information, and to obtain the patch from Windows Update. Read Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update for detailed instructions on using Windows Update.
Solution one
Check and repair the files stored on the hard drive using a recovery console CD, Recovery Tools CD, or a Windows XP CD as follows:

NOTE: HP and Compaq desktop PCs with Windows XP manufactured in summer 2003 and later contain software to create a Recovery Tools CD. This CD contains recovery console and other useful tools. If you have already created a Recovery Tools CD, use it to complete the steps in this section. Otherwise, make sure to create a Recovery Tools CD after the computer is repaired.

NOTE: If you are in the US or Canada and do not have a recovery console CD, Recovery Tools CD, or a Windows XP CD, you may order a recovery console CD from HP by contacting support (in English) or you can download a solution from Microsoft .
  1. Insert the CD and restart the computer.
  2. Just after the keyboard lights flash on and off, press the Esc key.
  3. Select CD-ROM , then press Enter .
  4. At the message Press any key to boot from CD , press the spacebar .
  5. Press R to enter the Recovery Console when shown.
  6. At the message Which Windows installation would you like to log onto? press 1 , then press Enter .
  7. Type in the administrator password when prompted. If no administrator account has been set, leave the password blank and press Enter .
  8. At the C prompt, type chkdsk /r , then press Enter .
The Chkdsk program checks the hard drive for errors and repairs any error it finds. Chkdsk takes at least twenty minutes, an hour or more is also possible.
  9. After the Chkdsk program is finished, type exit , then press Enter to restart the computer.
After the computer is working, install all critical updates for Windows to prevent this error from occurring again. For more information about updating Windows, read Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update .
Solution two
HP and Compaq computers with Windows XP pre-installed should do the following:
  1. Recover the computer from Recovery CDs by following the instructions in the document Performing a System Recovery in Windows XP .
If you do not have recovery CDs you can obtain them by following the instructions in the document Statement on the Availability of the Recovery and Quick Restore Software on CD (in English - for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) or from the document Obtaining a Recovery CD or DVD Set .
  2. After the computer is working, install all critical updates for Windows to prevent this error from occurring again. For more information about updating Windows, read Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update .
Installing all critical updates will prevent the error from occurring again.

NOTE: One or more of the links above will take you outside the Hewlett-Packard Web site. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside the HP Web site.

VNC - Failed to Connect to Server

http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/t-10322-Cant-get-VNC-to-work-I-need-help.html

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/554231-tightvnc-failed-connect-server.html
1. vnc running as service on 5900
2. accept connections is ticked
3. password is set
4. display number and/or port set to auto
5. router port forward to correct internal ip which is static
6. zone alarm has been shut down
7. windows firewall disabled

http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?p=21158
Lookup server address ... Failed to get server address

If windows firewall enabled on XP SP2:
LAN and dynamic ip or static ip address same story
vnc viewer (vncviewer.exe) can't reach vnc server by hostname
remote desktop connection (mstsc.exe) can't reach remote desktop by hostname
reason:
netbios name filtered, hostname blocked by windows firewall XP SP2

workaround over LAN
try to reach ip address instead of the hostname address
or
disable windows firewall if you have already an NAT/firewall on your router

UltraVNC or any VNC or Remote Desktop is UNUSABLE over ADSL
http://forum.ultravnc.info/viewtopic.php?t=5082
Since a few weeks (months? ) it looks like that some internet providers LIMIT the bandwidth over ports above 1024... at least in France
(maybe an attempt to counter Peer to Peer ?).
Consequently all the softwares that use TCP or UDP ports > 1024 have become simply unusable over ADSL/Cable connections, even worse than over RTC modems.
When Web browsing still flies...
The solution is to configure your UltraVNC server (or other software) to use ports below 1024 (between 800 and 1024 for instance).
Here is how to configure UltraVNC for port 80 (http port, which will never be limited as it is used for web browsing Wink ). If you already have a web server listening on this port, use a port like 8xy or 9xy.
1. In WinVNC properties page: Ports: Main: 80 (or 8xy)
2. In your router ADSL Modem configuration: you must route port TCP 80 (or 8xy). Restart your modem/router
3. From the outside: run vncviewer with Server = YourServerIP::80 (or YourServerIP::8xy)
-> UltraVNC is flying again Crazy
This trick also works with any software that usually use high ports (like RDP and so on...)

Re: Windows Has Blocked Software Because It Can't Verify The Publi
I have found that if "allow software to run or be installed even if
signature is invalid" is enabled then in situations like yours you should
have the option to install the software after you acknowledge the warning.
Otherwise if you can examine the certificate and trust it you can go to the
certification path page, select the top CA in the path, select view
certificate, if you trust it go to details page, select copy to file, select
name and path on your computer and save it. After you save it double click
the .cer file you saved and select install to start the certificate import
wizard which will install that certificate into your trusted root CA store
which should keep you from seeing the unknown publisher message. -- Steve

Java, ActiveX or thick Application

Multiview of GeoVision as Application
Is Multi-View a Java based Application that requires the Java JRE on the user's machine?
Assumming yes,...go into the config of the JRE (Java Icon in Control Panel).  Go to the Networking section of the config (exact location varies with version of JRE)
Set it to use "Direct Connection".
The Firewall Client will do the rest.

If Multi-View is ActvieX based (and runs in a browser) then you may have to remove all proxy settings in the browser which will force the browser to run as a Firewall [Winsock] Client.  The Firewall Client Software will do the rest.

If Multi-View is a stand alone "thick" application, then look to see if the App has "proxy settings",...if it does they should be blank as if there were no proxy at all.  The Firewall Client Software will do the rest.

Windows Vista - Vistalizator

Disabling Shutdown Event Tracker

If you are using Windows Server 2003 or 2008, you might have noticed that whenever you click on Shutdown button, it shows a dialog box asking you the reason behind shutting down the system. You have to select an option from drop-down box or write into Comment box to be able to shutdown the system.
Many people find it very annoying and want to disable it but they don't know how to disable it.
Today in this tutorial, we'll tell you a simple way to completely remove this annoying dialog box:
METHOD 1: Using Group Policy Editor
1. Type gpedit.msc in RUN dialog box and press Enter.
2. It'll open Group Policy Editor. Now go to:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System
3. In right-side pane, look for "Display Shutdown Event Tracker" option.

4. Now double-click on "Display Shutdown Event Tracker" and select "Disabled". Apply it and the annoying dialog box will never appear again.
NOTE: You can also use this method to enable Shutdown Event Tracker in Windows client OS like Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc. Just set the option value to "Enabled".
METHOD 2: Using Registry Editor
If you face problems while using Group Policy Editor, you can also use Registry Editor to do the same task.
1. Type regedit in RUN dialog box and press Enter.
2. It'll open Registry Editor. Now go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT
3. Under "Windows NT" key, look for a key "Reliability". If its not present, create it.
4. Now select "Reliability" key and in right-side pane, look for following 2 DWORD values:
ShutdownReasonOn
ShutdownReasonUI
If the DWORD values are not present, create them.
5. Now set values of both DWORD to 0

6. That's it. Now you'll not see the reason dialog box while shutting down the system.
Thanks to our readers "Config" and "Dragonsbane777" for sharing registry method.
NOTE: You can also use this method to enable Shutdown Event Tracker in Windows client OS like Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc. Just set the values of both DWORD to 1 using Step 5.

Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition on x64 plattforms

Download
Source

Free visual c 2008 redistributable Download

(Addendum)
Missing VCProjectAMD64Platform.dll:
It seems that under some circumstances the 32-Bit version of this  DLL does not get installed if you are on a 64-Bit OS. So you won’t find it in $($VCDIR)\VC\bin\x86_amd64. In this case you either have to copy it from an installation on a 32-Bit OS or extract it from the SDK installer medium. The DLL is located in the ISO distribution’s \Setup dir in the vc_stdx86.cab. It starts with FL_VCProjectAMD64Platform…if you rename it to the proper name it should work. Thanks Dustin for this helpful hint!
Xia Wei provided a helpful script that automates this tweaking. I did not try this myself but after a couple of positive reader comments it’s definitely worth mentioning it here. Download is available here: http://suma.soulogic.com/dl/VCE64BIT.zip
