Windows Server 2k8: Como Linux?

Windows Server 2008: Like Linux?
[Jan Stafford, Editorial Director]

With Microsoft's release of Windows Server 2008 on Feb. 27, the operating system landscape is due for a change. We've put together a package on the release, and you can check it out
here.

Linux won customers when Microsoft stopped supporting its popular Window NT server OS. But now Microsoft is fighting back by becoming more like Linux. Two of Windows Server 2008's new features, PowerShell and Server Core, have a Linux feel and fill gaps in migration processes. These changes will give Microsoft a stronger play in the Unix market, where Linux has gotten most of its customers.

Microsoft has also just made a new play with its promise to offer APIs for the latest versions of key applications for the first time.

Any new Microsoft OS prompts Linux users to scratch their heads and ask, "Why pay lots to upgrade from one Windows release that doesn't work very well to another that doesn't work well either?" Users say that a Windows Server release launch is ultimately an opportunity for any Microsoft IT shop to evaluate Linux. Even a Linux-like Windows won't provide the stability, flexibility and migration freedom of Linux.
